I installed and ran valgrind on my system. It ran without any errors or warnings.
The output from your test had:
==24351== WARNING: new redirection conflicts with existing -- ignoring it
--24351-- old: 0x04028b00 (strlen ) R-> (0000.0) 0x580c2e1a ???

And

--24351-- new: 0x049f5a50 (__memcpy_chk_avx_una) R-> (2024.0) 0x04853740 __memmove_chk
I think this the cause of the issue. I have no idea what is causing it though.
It would seem that UMS is trying to write to some memory space which is already occupied.
But then is not allocating a different memory space but ignoring it.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
It should be fine on only 1 stick of 4GB. Windows worked for me on 4GB when one of mine failed. It was very slow but just usableiamthebull wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2026 1:33 pm mik_s wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2026 10:23 pm
Did you try the ram tests using only 1 stick instead of in pairs.
No. With only 1 stick of RAM I was wondering if we would maybe run into memory issues due to the OS not having so much memory (only 4GB). So I stuck with pairs and mixed them up enough to be thorough. I would think if there was a hardware issue with the RAM it would have shown up by now. And there would be RAM issues with other programs. Which there isn't.
Linux does not have the bloat Windows has so should handle it better.
All of the database writes would be local so it should not matter if it is over the network.iamthebull wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2026 1:33 pm mik_s wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2026 10:23 pm
I'm thinking with all the read access to do with scanning a large amount of small MP3 files rapidly may be a factor.
I've been thinking about that also but from the perspective of maybe we don't get the malloc error on the Mint 22.3 install on the laptop because it's reading the Music folder over the network which is significantly slower.
Do you have space on the laptop to copy your MP3s to it, or even connect the media drive to it so they local when scanning?
That is quite an old SSD (10-13 years) so it may be starting to fail. It will also depend on how full it is and the amount of wear.iamthebull wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2026 1:33 pm The OS (Mint 22.3) is running on an SSD - INTEL SSDSC2BW240A4 (DC02) and the media files (Music folder) is on a HDD - WDC WD20EFRX-68EUZN0 (80.00A80) on the same PC.
I have been looking to see what software is available for it but Intel have dropped support for it so no longer have it available (there may have been some security flaws too) plus it is only on Windows.
I just saw a video about Xbox repair where the new SSD failed and they used a program called CrystalDiskInfo to check the SMART report on the drive.
I checked to see if that is available on Linux but its not.
I think a similar alternative is smartctl and GSmartControl for the GUI. I got that from this old reddit post so there may be something better now.
It is also mentioned on the Mint forum here.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
Hard disks
On the desktop
I copied the Music folder to a different physical HDD and scanned - malloc error
I copied the Music folder to a different physical SDD and scanned - malloc error
This suggests it's not a hardware issue with the hard disks
On the laptop (Mint 22.3)
I copied the Music folder to a local SDD and scanned - no errors
Memory
I did a memory scan overnight - 10 passes no errors
I also tested each memory stick individually and all 4 tests resulted in malloc error
I think it's safe to say now that there are no problems with the RAM itself.
I think it might be time now to explore the option that this may, in fact, be a programming issue and get the developers involved. What is the procedure there?

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
I think you have done everything you can.
My best guess is this is what is happening.
UMS is trying to write to a part of your memory which is normally free but in your case is being used. Any part/item of the hardware on your computer could be using that memory space.
In the valgrind test there is this:
==24351== WARNING: new redirection conflicts with existing -- ignoring it
--24351-- old: 0x04028b00 (strlen ) R-> (0000.0) 0x580c2e1a ???
--24351-- new: 0x04028b00 (strlen ) R-> (2007.0) 0x0484f340 strlen

--24351-- new: 0x049f5a50 (__memcpy_chk_avx_una) R-> (2024.0) 0x04853740 __memmove_chk
Perhaps the "ignoring it" part is the problem. Perhaps UMS code needs to be changed so if this happens instead of ignoring it, UMS tries a different memory allocation.
I am just guessing here though.
@mik_s could advise how to get the developers involved.
Good luck.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
Did you try another boot drive on the desktop though as that is the only other thing I can think of.
The drive the music is on should not be causing it as it is only being read. The database is on the system drive and that is still the common factor.
Could you put a fresh install of Mint on a spare drive or USB stick and boot from that and install UMS?
If that does not have malloc errors then it does narrow it down to your SSD boot drive, whether hardware issue or something in that OS install.
Try running those drive programs to check the SMART report of the drives, especially the OS SSD for the desktop.
Besides that I have no idea what else to check. I could open an issue on Github so the devs can see and may have better insight on what to look for.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
I booted Mint 22.3 using a Live USB and installed UMS-15.6.0 then scanned Music folder and got the malloc error. That should rule out my OS SSD.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
I opened an issue on github and the developers seem disinterested in addressing this issue.
