Switching from a PS3 to a smart tv

I upgraded to a PS5 and was all happy until I found out it can't function as a media server.
I'm looking to get a 2024/2025 OLED, or QD-OLED TV, LG or Samsung for example, as they seem to have the best deals.
How does it work (optimally), what to consider? Does the basic functionality cover playing everything, like H265 4K .mkv files? Even HDR files? Just fire up UMS and it works as good as PS3?

I know what you mean about the PS5. That was the first thing I tried on mine.
I managed to get the PS4 media player installed but it will refuse to run it.
I even got the web interface on it but it could not play anything, and the workaround to show the web browser has been patched.
For modern TVs they should be able to play most things without transcoding and there should be an existing conf for the big brands to tell UMS what is supports, if not it won't be difficult to tweak a similar one to work for it.
If a good conf is available it should just work as it does on the PS3 but as most things can be streamed you an enable subs or audio track on the TV itself any time without needing to restart.
4K TVs will be able to natively play h265 which is needed for UHD content.
One thing to think of is that most manufacturers no longer support DTS so if you have videos with this they will need transcoding/remuxing.
For HD videos this is not much of a problem but in UHD it takes a lot of processing to transcode so best to avoid these videos if your computer is not up to the task.
I know little about HDR but one quirk I know of with LG TVs is that they cannot play MKVs with Dolby Vision so these will need remuxing.
The problem is if anything changes like subs or seeking it can break the sync of remuxing and loose the DV data.
Some more info
here.

So to watch DV content, and in general for best quality and to avoid transcoding even without DV, I should enable the setting "Remux videos with tsMuxeR when possible instead of transcoding"?
I read that the webOS 2025 update brings DV support for MKV, but that it also has a memory leak which kills local streaming completely so that's not an option at least yet.

Yeah it will have to remux instead of transcoding will be needed for DV at the moment.
Its good to hear that WebOS 2025 allows DV in MKV so this will no longer be needed and the conf can be tweaked to say that this is now supported.
This will probably have to be changed by the user as I don't think there is a way for UMS to know what version of WebOS is being used to automatically use another conf.
I had a look around and did see some mention of the memory leak problem in their media player with this update so hopefully this will get fixed soon.
I could not find any definitive info on DV in MKV though. Do you have any sources of this like a changelog?

I'm interested in seeing a source for that too, I will be very happy if they add native MKV DV support but I can't find a source

Here G4 and C4 users are confirming this, seems its DV profile 8 and upwards.

I've been reading a few update posts for webOS 25 (33.21.85) and yeah there are a lot of people mentioning the memory leak problem. Also appears to break HDMI-CEC and ARC.
There was a newer update (33.22.52) but I don't think that fixed those problems but some have said it did.

There might be a fix for the ARC and CEC issue but may be a hack as one user would not say the solution publicly.
I think LG has even
pulled the update for some TVs as people are saying the update is no longer available even on the LG website.
I've been trying to find any official change logs to but don't think LG publishes these.
Best I could find was in
this video where it shows some new features when the update is ready to install, and
this article that says it will be rolling out to 2022, 2023 and 2024 OLED TVs.
Some have said profile 8 is working properly with DV but not profile 7 which does not play at all when previously it would and fall back to HDR

One cause could be the number of subtitles in an MKV video as some others have discovered

I read somewhere else that turning off quickstart apps helps with the memory problems but can't remember where I saw this.
So far the current consensus is to avoid this upgrade till these problems have been fixed.

If they can fix the bugs without removing the mkv dv support that will be great and we can update our confs to stop muxing those videos.
I’ve also noticed while looking at all these threads that most people don’t seem to know that UMS remuxes these videos automatically so they feel they are locked in to using third party apps on their TVs instead of the built in LG player.
Maybe we should do a better job of making that feature obvious on the website

The remuxing feature over DLNA to the built-in media player is the reason I came to UMS. I didn't find anything else that can do that. Jellyfin does remuxing, but you have to use their app. I only found out UMS could do it after some deep research, so yes, you could make it more obvious.
It's not without problems, as I described in the other thread, the main one being it's completely broken on the Mac. But still, it's really useful if you're still on WebOS 24 or older, and maybe on WebOS 25 if you have Profile 7 MKVs. If it's possible to update the confs to stop remuxing only for WebOS 25 and Profile 8, I don't see any reason not to do that already, since it solves several issues. I think the memory leak is fixed, but even if not, it's not specific to MKV.
