How to connect to UMS with VLC over internet

Has anyone setup VLC to connect to UMS from a remote location?

I have UMS running on a Windows PC. It works on my LAN, I can connect my XBox and smart TVs without any issues (well some initial issues, but all working now!) :D

I've setup my router to forward port 5001 to the Windows PC hosting UMS and that works in that portchecktool . com successfully connects, and when I use a web browser I get a 404 error from Jetty web server.

What I want to do is get VLC on my iPhone to connect from the internet to my UMS server and let me stream media the same way it works on my LAN.

I know I can setup port 9001 on my router and use UMS player, but I would prefer to use VLC.

Is this possible?

Thanks

UMS is mainly for the local network it can be used from the outside but does take some setup and network knowledge.
Some have used port forwarding, proxies, and DNS tricks to get it working but each method could have security implications and I know next to nothing about this to be able to help.

If you can get it working on the web player remotely then should work on VLC too as long as you forward the correct ports.
From memory this is 5001(main), 9001(web interface), and 9002 (web player) but there may be some other ports related to UPnP too that I can't remember.

Probably the best way to do this is to set up and host your own VPN so even when you are away your device will be seen part of the same local network and UMS should just work as it should if it was local.

I use OpenVPN to connect remotely to my router and then Chrome to watch videos. I've never tried using VLC remotely, but it should work the same way, I believe.
