LG 55C31LA direct stream HDR10 but never DoVi

Hello. This is my first post here.
I'm trying to wrap my head around this awesome program but its difficult to get what I want and the way I see it, it should be possible, because I somehow got it to work for one video that I had but wasn't able to reproduce it.
I have files in the .mkv container that have HEVC video with DoVi and HDR10 and audio with various codecs (usually THD, DTS, AC3...) and usually SRT subs.
I want to watch direct stream videos on the telly (LG 55C31LA) from the built in media player; and when I do, they usually open in HDR10 even though MediaInfo confirms it has DV metadata in it too.

I have not updated to WebOS 25.
In the attachments are my config files.
I believe it's got something to do with proper configuration because it has worked once when I tried tweaking stuff but I cannot get it to work again...

Could it be because of the subtitles?
Or maybe something wrong with my transcode settings... Help pls.

Code: Select all

Supported = f:mkv       v:av1|h264|h265|mp4|mpeg2|vp8|vp9   a:aac-lc|aac-main|ac3|dts|dtshd|he-aac|eac3|lpcm|mp3|mpa|opus                             si:ASS|SUBRIP   hdr:hdr10|hlg               m:video/x-matroska

Code: Select all

Supported = f:mp4|m4v   v:av1|h264|h265|mp4                 a:aac-lc|aac-main|ac3|ac4|dts|dtshd|eac3|he-aac|mp3                                       si:TX3G         hdr:dolbyvision|hdr10|hlg   m:video/mp4
Supported = f:mpegts    v:h264|h265|mpeg2                   a:aac-lc|aac-main|ac3|ac4|eac3|dts|dtshd|he-aac|lpcm|mp3|mpa                                              hdr:dolbyvision|hdr10|hlg   m:video/vnd.dlna.mpeg-tts
Thanks in advance..

Up until recently with WebOS 25, DV in MKV videos is not supported on LG TVs so these have to be remuxed to MP4 to keep the DV metadata otherwise they fall back to HDR10 if present.
However WebOS 25 seems to have a lot of problems so I would not recommend updating till these have been fixed. You can see more about this here.

Several things have to be linked together for this remuxing to work well and external subtitles and seeking can break it as it loses sync and this has been a bit of a headache for the devs.
Have a look at this thread where I was troubleshooting this for someone else.
In theory remuxing should work well if you remove the external subtitles but it may be the internal subtitles use a format like PGS which would not be supported and are needed for foreign/alien language parts.

If remuxing is not working it might be you have disabled it.
I noticed the transcoding engine priority has been changed which may also be a factor. This is the default order

Code: Select all

# List of enabled transcoding engines
# -----------------------------------
# The list is in no particular order, and can be set to "None" to disable all
# transcoding engines.
# Default: "FFmpegVideo,MEncoderVideo,tsMuxeRVideo,FFmpegAudio,tsMuxeRAudio,youtubeDl,FFmpegWebVideo,VLCWebVideo,VLCVideoStreaming,MEncoderWebVideo,VLCAudioStreaming,DCRaw"
engines =FFmpegVideo,AviSynthFFmpeg,MEncoderVideo,AviSynthMEncoder,tsMuxeRVideo,VLCVideo,FFmpegAudio,tsMuxeRAudio,FFmpegHlsVideo,FFmpegWebVideo,VLCWebVideo,VLCVideoStreaming,MEncoderWebVideo,VLCAudioStreaming,DCRaw,youtubeDl

# Ordered list of transcoding engines priority
# --------------------------------------------
# All engines should be included regardless of their enabled status. Set blank
# to have the default list generated upon next start.
# Default: "FFmpegVideo,MEncoderVideo,tsMuxeRVideo,AviSynthFFmpeg,AviSynthMEncoder,FFmpegAudio,tsMuxeRAudio,youtubeDl,FFmpegWebVideo,VLCWebVideo,VLCVideoStreaming,MEncoderWebVideo,VLCAudioStreaming,VLCVideo,DCRaw"
engines_priority =FFmpegVideo,FFmpegHlsVideo,AviSynthFFmpeg,MEncoderVideo,AviSynthMEncoder,tsMuxeRVideo,VLCVideo,FFmpegAudio,tsMuxeRAudio,FFmpegWebVideo,youtubeDl,VLCWebVideo,VLCVideoStreaming,MEncoderWebVideo,VLCAudioStreaming,DCRaw
Your UMS.conf does not show the documentation which is common on Linux or older installs so is hard to know what the other default settings are.
It might be better to delete yours to set everything back to default then set things up again.
This is the default UMS.conf that is used on a fresh install that has all the documentation. Make sure UMS is not running then overwrite yours with this.
UMS.conf
(63.62 KiB) Downloaded 2400 times

This won't effect your shared content or your database.

It might just be better to re-encode your files to MP4 using MKVToolnix or xmedia recode if you want the DV but don't update your TV.
You can then strip the unsupported subtitle streams and replace them with your external file too.
As this is just copying the streams and not a full re-encode it should not take long to do it.

Thank you for replying to my topic :D
I got the DoVi running but now I see 2 more problems;

1) my audio language priority in the config is English and UMS seems to ignore it - it Muxes the first available audio track, even though the English one is in the same format;

2) is it possible to use internal/external subtitles in any form and use the remuxed DoVi stream?

Code: Select all

Supported = f:mp4|m4v   v:av1|h264|h265|mp4                 a:aac-lc|aac-main|ac3|ac4|dts|dtshd|eac3|he-aac|mp3                                       si:TX3G         hdr:dolbyvision|hdr10|hlg   m:video/mp4
Since the renderer config shows it does accept some sort of internal subtitle format maybe we could make UMS convert subs into the desired format? I think ffmpeg can do that on its own but since we're already using it in UMS maybe we could add it to the pipeline... :?:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c:v copy -c:a copy -c:s mov_text output.mp4

To know what is happening if the wrong audio stream is being used when remuxing I will need to see your logs. See the section in red above.

If subtitles are in an unsupported form then to get them to display it has to burn them into the video but transcoding strips the DV metadata.
This has something to do with how FFmpeg works and I thought I had seen some support in updates to that but does not seem to preserve it for it to be used.
That is why tsMuxeR is used to recombine the streams as it preserves this DV data but this is also what causes problems when seeking or using external subs.

If you play from the #--TRANSCODE--# folder you can force transcode using those other subtitles.
