How to get a Sony TV to connect to UMS

Good day,
I've just installed UMS on my Linux Mint system. Version 22.1
Two things puzzle me.
1) When the Universal Media Server starts it opens a browser page at
http://localhost:5001/ and 404 - File Not Found: / is this correct?
There appears to another localhost at 9002 is this the web page?
2) UMS takes about four minutes to find the TV and other devices - is this OK?
3) On the TV I cannot find anything that looks like an external input. Installing VLC media player on the TV doesn't help.
The log file is :-
Code: Select all
/home/edward/Desktop/UMS-log/ums_dbg_2026-05-16-16-47.zip
The TV and PC are wired connection to a EE BrightBox (UK)
I'm sure I've done something stupid - any help in sorting this out will be much appreciated.

Port 9001 is for web settings, 9002 is just for the web player, and 5001 is for streaming to other devices over DLNA.
When first installed it should open
http://localhost:9001/ to allow you to set or disable login for the settings.
There is no webpage for port 5001 and will give a 404 error so that is correct. Use port 9001.
UMS probably was scanning your media files that you set up in the first run wizard so it might have been slower for other devices to be detected.
To know for sure I will need to see your logs. You did not post them, just put a code tag around the file location.
Make sure you follow the instructions in the red section above and use the attachments tab below when posting to upload them.
If the TV does not show anything it may be hiding unsupported files which can happen if UMS does not identify the TV but need to see the logs to know for sure.

Good Day,
Thanks for your prompt reply
Attached is the log file created this morning.
Sorry about my error on the original post.
Also, how do I change the Localhost setting?

Everything looks fine however you packed the logs before your TV was detected so I cannot see what the problem with that is.
The total duration of the logs is less than 2 min so there would not have been time for the TV to be detected if it is taking longer than it should.
Some devices do take a while to respond too, my old Samsung TV does this too.
Could you do the logs again and wait for UMS to detect the TV and attempt to browse the files on the TV before packing the logs.
The TV should have a media player so you don't need to install VLC.
Make sure your TV is on the same subnet as the computer running UMS. Since your computer is on 192.168.1.124 the TV needs to be something like 192.168.1.xxx
I suggest you remove your downloads folder from the shared folders when next doing logs

I'll remove these ones for privacy.
What do you mean about change localhost setting?
You can change the ports to something else but localhost means the computer it is running on.
You can connect to the settings from another computer on the network, just use the IP of the computer running UMS like
http://192.168.1.124:9001/

Hi Mik_s.
Attached is the new log file.
There are three devices found.
The 'Media Player on the TV doesn't show anything from UMS
My question about localhost stems from the bottom left corner of the status screen
Servers
192.168.1.124:5001
192.168.1.124:9002
They are shown in green but no 9001
I've removed all the shared folders to try to speed up the startup. it didn't takes many minutes to find these devices.
The TV is on 192.168.1.200

OK I see UMS saw the TV but is not matching a conf.
It should have used the Sony-BraviaXR.conf but I think something is wrong with the regex in that one so I altered it so it should work.
Copy this new conf to
/home/edward/.config/UMS/renderers/ and restart UMS
You would have still been able to browse and play files on the TV as it should still see UMS, but they may not play properly.
This is the TV's manual if you do not know how to do it.
Those servers are correct, 9001 is not a media server but the web settings.
You should still share some files for me to see if it is working, just be careful about the content.

Hello mik_s
Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately there is no folder /renders/ to copy to.
There is what appears to be a look-up table of devices in /UMS-Linux-15.5.0/. should the file be there?
Is there a problem because I have installed UMS as a sub folder of my downloads directory?

No that location is correct. If the folder does not exist then create it.
This is where custom renderer confs go, if you used the one in the installation folder then it could get overwritten when UMS is updated.
I know very little about Linux so I can't say if installing it in the downloads folder makes a difference.
You probably should install it in the usual programs folder though but I don't know what that is on Linux.

In Linux, normally you would install UMS in the /opt/ folder.
EG: /opt/ums/ums-15.5.0
You said: "Unfortunately there is no folder /renders/ to copy to"
The folder you are looking for is not "renders" but "renderers" which would be located at:
Wherever your installation is ums/ums-15.5.0/renderers/
If you reinstall to /opt that would be:
/opt/ums/ums-15.5.0/renderers/

In theory loading confs from the renderer folder inside the configuration folder should work on Linux like it does in windows so /home/{user}/.config/UMS/renderers/ should be correct here but I am not 100% sure.
I can't remember if that folder is created when installing UMS on Windows or if I had to make it, but it may work differently on Linux.
@boss could you confirm this with that conf I made. It should show in the logs that it has loaded it like this
Code: Select all
INFO 2026-05-14 18:51:33.110 [main] Loading renderer and device configurations from C:\ProgramData\UMS\renderers
TRACE 2026-05-14 18:51:33.126 [main] FileWatcher: Adding C:\\ProgramData\\UMS\\renderers\\PPlay.conf
