AC3 and DTS audio passthrough

Hi all,
I love the option for encoding DTS audio so it's passed through the PS3 to my receiver. Because for some reason every time I re-encode any DTS audio to AC3 background music and sounds seem to be much louder than the conversation in the audio. I'd let UMS do the DTS passthrough as is but my computer is not very fast and every time somebody is watching a movie while I try to use the computer it becomes very frustrating.

I'm hoping there is a way to perform what UMS is doing to the audio stream ahead of time to the mp4 files so that UMS can simply pass the audio/video directly to the ps3 without and transcoding, remuxing, etc. Anybody know how this can be done ideally to the existing mp4 files? If I have to re-rip my original discs that'd be fine too but more time consuming.

I've been trying to figure out for several days what sequence of commands UMS uses to do this but so far no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Try http://avidemux.org/, copy the video stream and reprocess the audio to your liking.

thanks for the quick reply and answer. I was trying it out and somehow managed to break UMS
Now nothing will play anymore. :(
