UMS not detecting any of my devices

Hi everyone!

I'm new to UMS so please excuse any ignorance in my post(s). I'm also sorry if this is a duplicate post.

The issue I appear to be having is that no matter what I do with UMS, it absolutely will not detect any of my networked devices, these are a PS3 and an Xbox 360. I really don't know why as I've checked all the settings that I'm familiar with that can affect network discovery (ports, firewall etc).

A little information on how my network is set up. I have a BT Homehub 3 as my router, from that I have a cable which runs to a powerline adapter with the other adapter and cable in the room I'm in right now. The cable here runs into a switch and I then have all of my devices (PS3, Xbox 360 & PC) also connected to the switch where I get my internet connection from. I can't help but feel that for some reason the switch is causing the issue as before I very recently go this PC, I was using my MacBook with Rivet to stream my music over wireless which worked absolutely fine. If I now plug my Mac into the switch via Ethernet (which I would assume would basically put it on the same network principle but wired instead), the Xbox fails to detect my MacBook running Rivet.

I'm really stumped so I would really appreciate any support or guidance on this.

Thank you in advance!

Craig

Hi Music Lord,

If your problem is network related and as you suggested probably your switch I would try following.
1. Make sure that you have the IP addresses of all your devices.
2. Log on to your PC and try to ping all the devices.
3. If it succeeds, try to telnet the device on the port that you use for streaming.
4. If still no success I would try step 1,2,3 again but now I would disconnect all devices from the network and add the devices one by one and test one by one.

Oh and within step 4 I would also disconnect from the internet and disable the firewall on PC and router...

See if it helps; good luck...

I would agree with Speedy.....this is not meant to be a suck eggs question.....is it a switch or a hub....as there is difference in both, or it may be simply that the port the powerline is plugged into is faulty.

Which port is your powerline plugged into the BT Home Hub, I scrapped mine due networking connectivity via the Hub...and there is a lot of discussion about this on the BT forum (or at least there was).

A little tip that might help in discovering the devices on your network.
Install Fing; it is available for Apple and Android.
Since you have a Mac you could install it as it will show you:
- all devices on your network.
- the available services; this way you should see the service offered on the UMS listening port as well as your Rivet port.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your responses.

SpeedyQ - Thanks again for your suggestions. I'll try all of the things you have suggested so far and let you know the outcome. Fing sounds really useful also so thank you for that too. Glad I won't have to constantly do it on the router settings page!

Geaves - Don't worry about it being a suck eggs question, all relevant :) I'm 99.9% sure it's a switch (or at least that's what it said on the box!), it's a gigabit one with 5 ports on the back ranging in low to high priority ports. Can you elaborate on what you mean by the powerline adapter port possibly being faulty? Only reason I ask is that's what the internet connection comes through, I have that plugged into the high priority port in the switch and everything else is plugged in via ethernet into the back of the switch also. My internet connection is fine so I'd assume it's not broken?

The powerline adapter ethernet cable is in port 2 on the back of the Home Hub. The first one is occupied by my Open Reach Modem providing my fibre connection. I've noticed there are some limitations when it comes to the Home Hub, I remember having many on the old Home Hub 2 I had. I'll peruse their forums at some point.

It may not be the powerline that is the problem, rather the port the powerline is plugged into on the hub, according to the forums there appears to be a drop off of data transfer to the point that it can fall below 10Mb. But 1 of those is a gigabit cant remember which one though.
If it said it was a switch on the box then a switch it should be, which it's intelligent enough to route the data packets.

Speedy's suggestion is the best way forward to start with, but whilst the ping option will give you a result and the switch work, it just might fail when data is being transferred, so perhaps use a pc and your ps3 switching ports to see which port is failing, hopefully only 1 rather than all of them.
