Possible bugs subtitles and chapters combination usage

Post by SpeedyQ »

Hi,

First of all, I'm very pleased with the new updates end effort that the developers have put into the new release. Thanks. :P
Well, I have possibly found 2 bugs.
First my setup. I'm streaming from PC to Philips TV wired and that is working stable over the last few years.
I have configered UMS to use FFMpeg and the Chapter option being set at 5 minutes interval.

Bug 1:
Streaming Red.Dog(2011).mkv with external Red.Dog(2011).srt file. I start the movie via Chapters option at 10 minutes from start of movie.
The movie and sound is starting correctly from 10th minute into the movie, but the subtitle starts from the start of the movie.

Bug 2:
Streaming The.6th.Day(2000).mkv with internal subtitles in 25 languages. The directory on the renderer does not show the subtitle languages at all (hence not on chapters).

Debug info of both issues in attached logs.
I hope to get this resolved, so if additional info or testing is needed, please let me know.

Actual FFMpeg subtitle implementation supports only external subtitles and doesn't support time seeking. It means that also juimping to chapters doesn't work. It seems like FFMpeg bug. Internal subtitles are still under development.

Ok, thanks for the information.
Does it also mean that chapter functionality will not be supported in the future in combination with FFMpeg?
I remember from earlier posts that it was the intention on the long term to let go of mencoder and support FFMpeg.
In the mean time I can stick with mencoder because recent development and bugfixes on mencoder shows that a lot of problems are in fact solved :P .
Let's see what the future will bring on FFMpeg development...

That is not about the chapter functionality. When FFMpeg will fix the problem with time seeking it will works. Unfortunately it is not a UMS problem. We can solve it but the performance will be much slower in comparison with MEncoder.

valib is right and just to sum it up quickly:
1) FFmpeg can seek perfectly, but not with subtitles
2) FFmpeg does not support internal subtitles
3) These are limitations of FFmpeg itself, not UMS
I hope that makes it clearer. Do you think we should just disable external subtitle support for FFmpeg? It does make it pretty useless until it can seek...

My short-term goal is to make FFmpeg substitute MEncoder whenever subtitles are not involved, since MEncoder is still the best option for both internal and external subtitles.

Would prefer it if you didn't. Love me some Crunchyroll Takeout. :)

Thanks again guys for the explanation.
Looks like I will not be using FFMpeg though, because for me it does not have enough advantages compared to Mencoder.
The majority of the movies in my collection have internal subtitles and I do use the chapter functionality.
But I can imagine FFMpeg will suit others just fine, so keep up the good work.
