Updated UMS sees only folder but no video files

Post by PanchaMaestro »

I have an older Samsung that used to play files from UMS. Was having some latency issues so updated UMS. Since then the Samsung sees the folder; UMS sees my Samsung. But when I go to the folder it repeatedly says no files present. Obviously that folder has plenty of files present; they play on my computer, stream to my iPad fine with VLC, etc. Wiped and fresh installed the program. Any advice? Don't even see much about the connectivity with the Samsung in the trace log. Irrelevant stuff about Samsung speakers not even related.

Quite possibly it could be corruption in the database that sometimes happens when it is updated.
Deleting it will create a new one. It is located in "C:\ProgramData\UMS\database"

To confirm or if it is anything else I will need to see logs. See the section in red above.

I completely uninstalled and did a fresh install. No luck.

I added a few more files in my film server. I made a point to give them all different names and made sure there were active files in all of them. My Samsung TV sees the multiple files but calls them all "Video". Still sees the amount of folders I've shared but no the video files within or the the names I've given those folders.

Here are the logs

It is a database error.

Code: Select all

Thank you for the advice. I deleted the data base file. Rebooted both my PC and the tv. Now the TV just spins, times out and fails to see the shared folders altogether.

I was running an older version of UMS fine for years. The update is what killed it. Is there still a way to download an older version of UMS? The TV is in perfect working order but it is 10ish years old now.

From memory, the UMS conf file changed for V8 on.
Perhaps your UMS has kept this old conf file when you installed the new version.
The conf file (for Windows) is located at: "C:\ProgramData\UMS\UMS.conf"

You could try:
Uninstall UMS.
Delete the folder "C:\ProgramData\UMS\"
Install UMS.

Was UMS running when you deleted the database? if so it might not have worked.

I looked over your UMS.conf file and this is from a very old version which still has old settings that have been moved or renamed.
You could try and reinstall making sure you select the clean install option to reset everything. I think this has been moved to advanced options the last time i did this.

You could also rename "C:\ProgramData\UMS" so you have a backup of your current settings.

If it still does not work then make new logs with after the clean install.

I'm having a similar issue - not sure if it's exactly the same, so apologies if I'm hijacking a thread, and please let me know if I should start a separate one.

I just recently picked up an Xbox 360, and have been trying to set it up to work with UMS. The console sees my UMS server, but when I attempt to access it the Xbox just reports that no videos are found.

I'm using the Docker version of UMS (my media is stored on a Linux-based QNAP NAS). Looking at the logs when the Xbox attempts to connect to the server to get the listing of video files, I get this:

Code: Select all

DEBUG 2025-09-01 10:16:13.431 [jupnp-sync-protocol 737-1] Recognized media renderer "Xbox 360"
DEBUG 2025-09-01 10:16:13.472 [jupnp-sync-protocol 737-1] Discovering the root folder for Xbox 360
DEBUG 2025-09-01 10:16:13.511 [jupnp-sync-protocol 737-1] Bad id 15 found in path
DEBUG 2025-09-01 10:16:13.512 [jupnp-sync-protocol 737-1] Trying to browse direct children on a null object for objectID '15' !
Those are the only log lines created when pressing the "A" button on my XBox controller to get the video list from UMS; no other activity from the Xbox occurs until closing the connection to UMS. I've wiped the Docker setup and recreated from scratch a few times and I get the exact same 15 number each time (even with other renderers on my network popping in and registering), so I don't believe it's database related. Media is listed and plays fine via the web player.

I was going to post my own separate thread here, but then saw this one with a similar description. Looking at the log files provided by PanchaMaestro above, I see they were also getting a very similar error - here's a snippet from their logs:

Code: Select all

DEBUG 2025-08-19 01:52:39.922 [jupnp-sync-protocol 787-1] net.pms.renderers.ConnectedRenderers Recognized media renderer "[TV]Samsung LED55"
DEBUG 2025-08-19 01:52:39.923 [jupnp-sync-protocol 787-1] net.pms.store.MediaStore Bad id null found in path
DEBUG 2025-08-19 01:52:39.923 [jupnp-sync-protocol 787-1] net.pms.network.mediaserver.jupnp.support.contentdirectory.UmsContentDirectoryService Trying to browse direct children on a null object for objectID 'null' !
Same kind of log lines I'm getting, only they got an id of null instead of 15.

Digging into the source on Github:
  • The Discovering the root folder log-line comes from UniversalMediaServer/src/main/java/net/pms/store/MediaStore.java line 165 in function public synchronized void discoverChildren()
  • The Bad id <id> found in path log-line comes from UniversalMediaServer/src/main/java/net/pms/store/MediaStore.java line 724 in function private StoreResource search()
  • The Trying to browse direct children on a null object log-line comes from UniversalMediaServer/src/main/java/net/pms/network/mediaserver/jupnp/support/contentdirectory/UmsContentDirectoryService.java line 806 in function private BrowseResult browse()
I've left out the arguments for the above functions just for brevity here. I hope that to track things down - I believe something internal is breaking when child objects of certain renderers are being enumerated, and unexpected results are then being passed back to calling functions resulting in video lists failing to be sent to renderers.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help, or if I should start a separate thread 👍

OK, I've done a bit more digging around on my end - note, while I have some coding experience I haven't touched Java in decades, and this is my first time looking at this codebase.

The Bad id 15 found in path in my logs is coming from a search(String[] searchIds) function in net/pms/store/MediaStore.java; in my case that searchIds array just contains the single string "15". The function calls getWeakResource(String objectId) on the 15, which ultimately returns a null, generating the Bad id 15 found in path message.

The search(String[] searchIds) function is being called by the getResources(String objectId, boolean returnChildren) function also found in net/pms/store/MediaStore.java. This function seems to be designed to take in a singular object ID, which is where my 15 is coming from. There's a function call in here StoreResource resource = getResource(objectId); that returns null for a value of 15; and while there is handling in the function for a return of null, the comment included in that handling code says "nothing in the cache do a traditional search, Now strip off the filename" which suggests it's expecting objectId to be some kind of path? It tries to split the string by the location of the first "/" character in it, which in my case doesn't exist in the string "15", and so it too fails.

There are no calls to getResources in net/pms/store/MediaStore.java, so it's being called from somewhere else in the codebase... it's late here right now, so I'm done looking at this for today, I'll see if I have some time to look at it more tomorrow. Overall though, my goal is to work out where this "15" is coming from, and why some parts of the code seem to think it should be an ID, and some parts seem to think it should be a path (that seems messy to me).

Nice investigation. I don't know enough to go digging around in code but I do try and keep an eye on changes on Github.
I know there was some issue with getting children of children that may be related as there was a problem with the method implemented.

I found that for these kind of errors the null is coming from the renderer, probably because it is being sent the wrong Ids.
Search your logs for "ContentDirectory:1#Browse" and check the messages sent to the renderer just before and after this to see what UMS is sending.
On this thread I posted the request from their PS3 where the ObjectID is null

Most of the time the cause for this is the database being corrupted so the renderer does not get the right Ids to begin with but there may be something else going on here as sometimes deleting the database does not fix it.
