Unable to stream mpeg4 video to my Samsung TV

Post by Dessloch »

I have a Q60 series Samsung TV, I tried to stream some tv shows from my pc, but it does always fail due to network problem. I can see all the files and the thumbnails also generated, but the playback fails. On my computer the webplayer works normally. Is it a settings problem?

I attached a picture about the codec.

I have the latest UMS version: 15.1.0.

Those videos use the DIVX codec that is not supported on your TV so these are transcoded.

One thing UMS was doing is if one of the streams in a video is supported then instead of transcoding that stream it remuxes it to reduce the amount of processing needed.
However it was not long ago that we found that for some devices the transcoded stream has to match the transcoding profile so if there is a mismatch by remuxing a stream even if on its own is supported then the device can fail to play.
In this case the audio is MP3 which is supported so was being remuxed, but the transcoding profile is set to AC3 so it confuses the TV as this is what it is expecting.

This is fixed in 15.2 but that is not publicly released yet. In the meantime you can use this conf as a temporary fix.
Copy it to C:\ProgramData\UMS\renderers and restart UMS. When you update to 15.2 this will no longer be needed so you can delete it.

Thank you very much for the file.

How can I change the current renderer config to the new one you just sent to me?

Just copy it to C:\ProgramData\UMS\renderers and restart UMS.
I have given this a higher priority than the current one so will be used instead.
I changed the name to "Samsung TV 2019+ temp fix" so you can see if it is being used in the web UI.

I managed to set your renderer, but the problem still persist: when I started to play the video file it does nothing and after a while it's says network error. Other movies/tv shows are working as intended. Is there a reset for the settings?

Could you do new logs with that modified conf so I can see if it is being used

I can see that the modded conf is being used so that workaround fix should be working as it is doing a full transcode.
I don't see anything else that could be causing it to fail but I am not an expert or the actual transcoding process.

It may be something to do with those videos. Try force transcoding some other types of videos.
Play them from the #--TRANSCODE--# folder and chose one of the options there. You currently have this hidden so you need to enable it in the settings.

For those AVIs you can confirm your TV can't natively play them by selecting "no transcoding".
If they do happen to play then I can tweak the conf to say this format is supported.

Another thing you can try is to see if the transcoding command is actually working by running it separately in the command line.
Sometimes this will show more information if it is failing that may not be displaying inside the logs.
This is what is being used for ffmpeg but I set the output to test.mp4

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\Universal Media Server\bin\ffmpeg.exe" -y -loglevel info -hwaccel auto -threads 1 -i "E:\Torrent\Scrubs\Season 4\Scrubs.S04E07.avi" -map 0:V -map 0:a:0 -bufsize 47000k -maxrate 46000k -crf 19 -ab 448k -c:a ac3 -c:v libx264 -preset superfast -level 31 -pix_fmt yuv420p -f mpegts test.mp4
Just copy this and paste into the command line (Type CMD in the windows search box and select command prompt)
If it starts to transcode properly the output will show something like

Code: Select all

frame= 8058 fps=3127 q=-1.0 size=  164347KiB time=00:05:33.81 bitrate=4033.1kbits/s speed= 130x elapsed=0:00:02.57
then you can press ctrl-c to stop it.
If it does not get that far or is stopping on its own could you copy the messages and post them here.

I do see you have disabled transcoding for MKVs.

Code: Select all

# Skip transcoding for the following extensions (comma-separated)
# ---------------------------------------------------------------
# Do not transcode files with an extension in the list.
# Asterisk (*) means do not transcode anything.
# Note: This overrides the renderer configuration. It should only be used for
# troubleshooting when you are not able to edit the renderer configuration.
# Default: ""
disable_transcode_for_extensions =mkv
If the conf is correct then it should only transcode those that use an unsupported codec, usually DTS audio as Samsung dropped support for it a while ago.
Do you have some MKVs that UMS was transcoding that can be played without on the TV?
