Videos ending after 10-14 seconds when viewing from PS3

Post by Busto »

I was doing a rewatch of Always Sunny and found that some of the files, which I've watched multiple times before, were suddenly ending after 10 seconds or so and going on to the next episode. File runs fine through the browser, just not when streaming to PS3.
File I tested for this trace was named "S02E08 The Gang Runs for Office.mkv"

It does seem to start transcoding normally but I did see a message the pipe was interupted

Code: Select all

DEBUG 2026-01-17 04:53:45.936 [Thread-64] net.pms.platform.windows.WindowsNamedPipe Windows named pipe interrupted after writing 0 bytes, shutting down...
TRACE 2026-01-17 04:53:45.936 [Thread-64] net.pms.platform.windows.WindowsNamedPipe
java.io.InterruptedIOException: null
	at java.base/java.io.PipedInputStream.awaitSpace(Unknown Source)
	at java.base/java.io.PipedInputStream.receive(Unknown Source)
	at java.base/java.io.PipedOutputStream.write(Unknown Source)
	at net.pms.platform.windows.WindowsNamedPipe.run(WindowsNamedPipe.java:224)
Usually when this happens it is the receiving device that is closing the connection but there is usually some mention of this in the logs but there is not here.
Maybe something on your computer is blocking it?

Doe any of the other transcoding engines work? Try them from the #--TRANSCODE--# folder.

What has changed since you last watched this on the PS3? If it was on a previous version of UMS which one?

Looks like it will play with tsMuxer. FFmpeg and MEncoder both end in the first 15 seconds and the others just give the "content cannot be played" error on the ps3.

I think it has been over a year since I last went through these. The biggest change was going from Windows 10 to 11 (fresh install). I installed the 14.9.0 version of ums at the time and was using that when I first ran into trouble a couple days ago. Upgraded and did a clean install of 15.3.0.

Could you do logs of using the other transcoding engines so I can see why tsMuxer works but the others do not.

I am trying to track down why a Samsung TV cannot play h264 videos and I suspect a similar thing is happening here.
Could you try some previous versions and see which one broke videos playing on the PS3. You can get them directly fro Github here.
Post logs of the last version that it is working and those from the next one so I can compare them.
As 14.9.0 was working on Win 10 then start with that. If it does not work then this might narrow down the problem to something in Win 11.

Was it working previously on 14.9.0 then suddenly stopped? Did this only start happening after updating from 14.9.0 to 15.3.0?
Does it only happen to this specific video or are other affected?

I continued on watching episodes from that point found that tsmuxer couldn't play the next problem video (possibly because it was showing Vorbis as audio and the Ps3 couldn't read that format). This file seemed to work with MEncorder instead of FFMPEG or tsMuxer.

I found the version I previously used to view these (13.8.0). Tried it now and all the files played fine. 14.9.0 was what I downloaded after the upgrade to windows 11, but I never tried to play these files since then.

I'll try some of the versions between these and see when it stops working and reply again later.

EDIT:
After testing:
I found 4 episodes that had the same problem as the one I listed earlier. I used them to test versions.

At 14.3.0 - trouble files still play, but 3 out of 4 of them are very pixelated (including the episode in my original post).

At 14.4.0 - 3 files stop working at 14s, 1 continues but pixelated like in 14.3.0 (pixelated one is same episode as listed above and in original post)

Attached logs are of 14.4.0 showing the stopping using file "...The Gang Sells Out.mkv" and "The Gang Runs for Office" to show pixelation (low bitrate?)

Just to let you know that I'm having the same issues on PS3. It was working fine until mid-2025, but since one of the updates (sorry I can't say which one for sure) I started having issues playing on PS3 that I've never had before: cannot play content, message that the file was deleted from the server (but it's there, of course), I have to try more than one decoder to play files that played fine before, etc.
I hope your solution will help me as well.
