The TV probably is not matching to the correct renderer conf so is using the wrong settings by using the DefaultRenderer.conf.

I suspect that empty folder had videos the TV cannot natively play so it is hiding them.
Either that or UMS is transcoding those videos into a format the TV cannot play when otherwise it can be streamed.
The right conf would tell UMS when to transcode so they will show and be playable.

The cause might have been a firmware upgrade that changes TV's header on the network, or a change to a conf, so a match cannot be made.

I will need to see your logs to know exactly what is going on. See the link in my sig.
Since you have multiple Samsung TVs it will help if you gave the IP of the one with the problems.

Sorry I missed this. I recently moved so have been busy.

That J series conf was a custom mod for that specific user's TV so was not suitable to be added to the included confs.
That conf was not actually matching J in your TVs model name, it only works as it matches "SEC_HHP" in the UserAgent which is far too generic.
The other Criteria would not have matched anyway the way it was written.

The default Samsung confs should have made a match, even if they were not specific to that model, which should allows some support if not perfect.
This assumed the model numbers always had the series letter followed by 4 numbers. Yours had 3 numbers and another letter so was not matching.

I can't find your exact model TV but I think it belongs to the same series as UA75JU6400, I think the last 2 digits are for features or region.
I can see that it is a UHD TV so that conf you are using is not set up for this.

I modified the Samsung-UHD.conf so it will match yours now. Copy this to C:\ProgramData\UMS\renderers\ and restart UMS and it should be used.
Saving it here prevents it from being overwritten on an update.

I'll make a request that this change can be added if this works for you.

so that file did work but i only tried a few files in one folder and one did not play, it looked like it tried to but got a unexpected error message. i took out that renderer and dropped back in that j config and it did play?
here is a link to the model and some specs https://i.sears.com/s/d/pdf/mp-tc/10000 ... 1940929302

Could you do logs when using that mod conf so I can see why it is not working?
It the error on the TV or in UMS?

It might be the video that is not working is using a format unsupported by the TV and the conf says it is so is being streamed when it should be transcoded.
If it is being transcoded when it shouldn't I can tweak the conf, but if it is unsupported and transcoding is not working there might be something wrong with the transcoding settings that is causing the error.

Check to see if 4K videos are working too using both confs. The J series is not set up for UHD so it will be transcoding to a lower quality if it does play.

You could also try to update the firmware on the TV. There is a note in that conf

Code: Select all

#
# Upgrade to latest firmware on old models to enable all codecs
#
This looks to be the correct page on Samsung's website

I found the manual and all supported formats are listed on page 182.
I don't' have time ATM but will will compare the settings in the conf to this later.

OK I can see that Terminator will be transcoded as it uses the AV1 codec that is not listed as a supported format on your TV. If this is correct then it would not work using the other conf either.
You can verify by playing from the #--TRANSCODE--# folder and choose "no transcoding". If it plays then the TV supports this and I can add this as supported.
(if you do not see this then you have to enable it in navigation settings>virtual folders)

If the conf is correct and the TV cannot play then it has to be transcoded.

I don't see any errors while transcoding, just that the connection was reset by the TV so it does not like it for some reason.
This can be tricky to get the right settings as it is not something I can do so you will have to experiment with some of the settings in the conf.

The other conf does not specify a transcoding profile so it is using the default MPEGPS-MPEG2-AC3.
This does use a lot of network bandwidth as it is not very efficient and is unsuitable for high bitrate videos like UHD.
The one set in this conf is MPEGTS-H264-AC3 which should work on most devices, it works on my F series TV.

I don't know if HLS was supported on TVs then but you could try one of those profiles, if it works it will be almost as good as if was streaming.

You can also compare the J series conf and try some settings from that if different.

Have a look at C:\Program Files\Universal Media Server\renderers\DefaultRenderer.conf for the options.

There were other videos that are marked as needing to be transcoded.

Code: Select all

File "Now You See Me Now You Dont [2025].mkv" will not be streamed because the H.264 level (5.2) is not supported by the renderer (limit: 5.1).
The manual says it only supports up to level 5.1 but sometimes higher ones will work. Test with "No transcoding" to confirm

Code: Select all

Audio codec "mpa" failed to match support line f:mpegps v:divx|mp4|mpeg1|mpeg2|vc1|wmv|h263|vp6 a:ac3|lpcm|adpcm|aac-lc|he-aac|wma|eac3|mp3|dts m:video/mpeg w:1920 h:1080 b:160000000
Final verdict: "P1010513.mpg" will be transcoded with transcodingSettings "FFmpeg Video (MPEGTS-H264-AC3)" with mime type "video/mpeg"
I assumed mpa was part of mp3 so this should work. The manual does not specify it but if this works with "No transcoding" I can add this.

Another thing that can force transcoding is a slow network speed but yours should be fast enough.
