@ mik_s
This is assuming the UMS install is at /opt/ums

When installing UMS on Linux, the renderers folder (with all the included *.conf files) gets installed as a folder under the main UMS install.
EG: /opt/ums/ums-15.5.0/renderers/

But, I did create a folder (this is not created during install) at /{user}/.config/UMS/renderers/
And placed "Sony-Bravia8.conf" into that.

Upon restarting UMS, UMS included all the conf files at /opt/ums/ums-15.5.0/renderers/ and also included "Sony-Bravia8.conf" in the /{user}/.config/UMS/renderers/ folder.

Hello again,

I've reinstalled UMS. No change in operation.
When UMS starts I still get a page not found error (404) clicking web browser button gives same result.
It's just taken 6.5 minutes to find the servers (5001 & 9002) and the first renderer. According to the info log.
Now at 11 minutes it's found the second renderer.
The third appeared 4 min later.

None of the three renderers know anything about UMS.

What else to do?

@boss thanks for confirming.
Yeah I know the folder for render confs is in the installation folder but those can be overwritten on update if you made custom tweaks.
Those saved in the in the config folder will not get touched and is also makes it available if you have multiple versions installed like you do.

@TedM could you do new logs with that conf saved where I said and don't pack until the devices are detected.
What is the URL of the page when it says not found (404)

Its also possible your router is blocking some of the traffic that is making it slow to detect.
I recently moved house and went with a different ISP for my internet, but my new router was stopping my devices from being detected.
Looking though the routers settings I found something called IGMP Snooping and it was on blocking mode. Putting it to standard fixed it for me.
Check for something similar in yours and make sure UPnP is enabled.

Hello again,
The URL is :- http://localhost:9001/

This may be the second time I've sent this. I went away for a few hours while in the process of posting this answer.
I don't know if it got through.

I checked those logs to see if that conf was loaded but could not find it, but also I saw that no confs were being loaded at all.

Code: Select all

INFO 2026-05-21 09:14:26.659 [main] Enabled 0 configurations, listed in order of loading priority:
I double checked your first logs to make sure this had not changed and those were the same, it is not normally a place I check so missed it.

I think what is happening is your OS is blocking UMS from accessing the folder you installed it in and this would also explain the 404 error as the web page html is also located in here.

As far as I know Linux has strict permissions for programs to allow access to your profile folder which also includes your download folder.
Try reinstalling in the normal place for programs in Linux like @boss says and this should fix it.

Hello again mik_s,

I have removed everything to do with UMS including the down load tgz file.
Re-downloaded UMS-Linux.15.5 etc file.
It went as normal my Downloads folder.
I extracted it to a new folder (home/Edward/UMS-15.5.0)
Clicking on UMS.sh produces the same result as before. File not found error 404.

It must be something about the Brightbox router that is not compatible - I'm not prepared to try changing settings there.

Thanks for all your efforts.

That is still in your profile folder so it still would not have permissions.
Anything in the /home/ folder will have the same restrictions.
It is similar on Windows, programs cannot write to the "program files" or "Windows" folders so have to save their configuration files somewhere else.

@boss says programs are installed in /opt/ so put it there so it looks like /opt/ums

Are you new to Linux?

Try doing this.
Assuming you are using the user account "edward" and the 64-bit version of UMS.

From you log files it appears that your configuration and database files etc are located at: /home/edward/.config/UMS/
That is correct and you can leave that intact.

Log on to your console.
Close UMS if running.
remove /home/edward/Downloads/UMS/ ***DO NOT USE THIS LOCATION FOR YOUR UMS INSTALL.

cd /opt
mkdir ums
cd ums
***Copy the UMS install file (UMS-Linux-15.5.0-x86_64.tgz) to this folder /opt/ums
tar -xvzf UMS-Linux-15.5.0-x86_64.tgz
*** You should then have the UMS program folder: /opt/ums/ums-15.5.0

*** Now try and restart UMS: /opt/ums/ums-15.5.0/UMS.sh
Or
./UMS.sh if already in the /opt/ums/ums-15.5.0 folder.

If you still have the "File not found error 404", restart UMS in trace mode and post your log files.

****** Once you get it running, I can modify a startup script for your installation which is better than just starting with UMS.sh

Hello boss,
Sorry about slowness in answering.
I've installed UMS as you detailed with the app in /opt/ums and it works.
It is a bit slow in finding the renderers but it does complete it eventually.
So thanks for your help, I've not come across an installation problem like this before in the
six odd years I've been using Linux Mint.

Do I need to mark the Subject as 'Solved'

Glad it worked.
Because of all the installing and reinstalling you have done, I would also delete the database.
When you next start UMS, it will create a new clean database. The first time will take a little while as it is creating it from scratch.
You do it like this:
Stop UMS.
cd /home/edward/.config/UMS/
rm database -R
Start UMS

Can you also post a copy of your file: /home/edward/.config/UMS/SHARED.conf

Are you still starting UMS by running the file UMS.sh?
If so, you would be better to have a startup script to start UMS.
Does your system use init?
EG: Do you have files in the directory /etc/init.d ?
