No music showing up
Is there a way to show what music the server finds and if that music is supported?
I have a Ubuntu server installed. I am running UMS and getting no errors at all. (well I did to begin with but all are now gone) Not in the standard output and not in the debug log. When I try to get music from a Windows 7 box I get no files displayed. I have tried files with a FLAC, MP3, and M4a type. Nothing shows up when a scan is done.
I have set the "files =" to nothing and to the path to find all the media files. Again, nothing.
So, is there a way to see what is going on?

Re: No music showing up
This was a headless server so I brought up the UI on another server and did a scan there. The folders and such searched were listed along the bottom of the display. So things were loading.
The next thing I did was go out to my Samsung TV and tried to see if I could see and play the files there. No problem. Hmm...
I was testing with Windows Media Player and found out that no matter what computer I was on, the Network Media Devices displayed the Universal Media Player in the list, I could double click on it and in Windows Media Player the Universal Media Player was listed under the "Other Libraries" option as "Universal Media Server [xxxxx]" but when I looked at the Music/Album selection I get: "Contacting the remote media library". The Media Player spins for about three seconds and then displays "No files have been found on this remote library."
So other systems are working fine but not WMP.
I am using WMP 12. I have turned off the firewall on the machines to see if it was that but still nothing.
Any idea why WMP is not showing files/songs?

Re: No music showing up
I have backed out to Oracle Java 1.7.17. Did not change anything.
One thing I did realize is that I have another MythTV pnp server which is showing up fine in Windows Media Center. Universal Media Server does not show anything.

Re: No music showing up
I backed out UMS to 2.6.2. Still nothing showing up.
I added movies to the list of things in the cache and they do not show up either.
Am I wrong? Is Windows Media Player not supported by UMS?

Hi, as an end user like yourself I'm trying to understand why you would want UMS to service WMP, simple samba shares on your Linux server would surfice. I use UMS via Linux to play through to my PS3 or Xbox, my windows PC's simply see the Linux shares and add them to their WMP libraries.
Re: No music showing up
I am thinking that this is better as well. I have tried everything to get WMP as a client to UMS. I am coming to the conclusion that this cannot be done.
What I wanted is one file format. Presently I have apple lossless, flac, wmp3 (lossy). When I add a some I have to add it in three places. It would be nice to have only one file on disk (preferably w4a) That way I can have the mapping:
W4A -> Itunes ->
W4A -> MP3 -> Windows Media Player
W4A -> FLAC -> Foobar2000
W4A -> something -> Samsung TV
W4A -> something -> Samsung Bluray Player
W4A -> something -> Panasonic Bluray Player
W4A -> something -> iphone
W4A -> something -> Android device
I thought that was what UMS was good for and so far it fits a couple of these. Personally, I do not use WMP but the wife does and I can get "points" if she does not have to do anything other than using the Windows Media Device and open up WMP.
Since I can install a free codec so that WMP can access a folder that is something but still, one app for all would be nice.

Yes points scoring is definitely a good moveGaryFDes wrote:I am thinking that this is better as well. I have tried everything to get WMP as a client to UMS. I am coming to the conclusion that this cannot be done.

I 'see' UMS as a bridge to connect and play content to DLNA and UPnP devices on the network and that it does very well.
Re: No music showing up
Yeah I don't know about WMP support, we had disabled it until recently because someone had it working. Here is the report of it working, maybe you can talk to this user and find out how to make it work: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=654
