Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
"I tried UMS-13.0.0 as you suggested and the media scan completed without any problems."
That would suggest that there is nothing wrong with your system.
If you are willing, you could install a newer version so we can determine at which version the issue started.
Can you try: UMS-14.6.0-x86_64.tgz from the same download site.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
I may have been mistaken when I reported that there are no issues with UMS-13.0.0 or I may have gotten lucky on the first attempt. There was an error showing up on the terminal and in the log file as soon as I booted the server. I attempted the media scan anyway and waited a few min. I didn't get any specific message about the scan completing but waited long enough that it should have completed and connected with the client. Everything seemed to be ok. So I attempted 14.6.0 and CRASH. Then 14.0.0, 13.10.0, 13.6.0 and 13.3.0 and they all CRASHED. So I tried 13.0.0 again and it CRASHED.
Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
Glad your memtest was good. It was a long shot but it rules that out.
Instead of deleting the database each time you can just clear the cache which will start a full scan. Might be easier.
I was looking into that malloc error too and found this on a forum for another music based program from last year.
I don't really understand what they are saying but seems to be a change in Glib that is causing a buffer overflow somewhere, or maybe this function.
Maybe something similar is happening here.
I don't know if Glib is something that is part of the OS or was used when compiling UMS.
Since the previous versions of UMS is crashing too I am leaning toward a OS problem and something may need downgrading.
The devs will probably need to look into this further as this may be the cause of problems a few other people have had on Mint.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
glibc was the other thing I mentioned.
For Mint information says it is highly discouraged trying to update glibc as it is a major component of the OS.
Information is that if their is a Mint version update available, this is the only way it should be done.
It's a hard one.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
With version 12.0.1 when I first added the folder the scan completed immediately and in the log file:
but when I went to browse with a client it seems a scan of the browsed folder was triggered and it CRASHED with same malloc() error.
Code: Select all

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
I have a computer with Linux Mint 21.3 so I tried UMS-15.6.0 on it and I was able to scan the same Music folder (mounted shared network folder in this case) without any issues. Seems the issue is present on Mint 22.3 and not 21.3. Log file attached.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
It might be a problem in Mint 22.3 but maybe it could still be a hardware problem.
Could you update the computer with 21.3 to 22.3?
Last time I used Mint I remember it does a system backup before a major upgrade so you can revert it.
If that one works just fine on 22.3 then it has to be a problem on the other computer.
I would still suspect the RAM in that one, maybe the mentest did not stress the memory enough and needs more cycles. I would let it run as long as possible.
You could also try removing ramsticks and only use one at a time for testing.
If the problem is something in Mint 22.3 I don't know how to narrow it down even further to troubleshoot.
Maybe something in UMS will need changing to totally fix this but I have no idea what.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
I also think a good starting point from here is to try 1 x RAM module at a time as mik_s said.
Also, chack in your main logs for mailoc() issues.
grep "mailoc()" /var/log/messages
Also check your computer startup log.
dmesg | grep -i "malloc()"
Can you run the "free" command and check that your free memory is reporting correctly.
Mint 22.3 does use a newer kernel that 21.3 so 22.3 is a major change.
@mik_s
I found this information online:
The malloc(): corrupted top size error is a classic GNU C Library (glibc) memory corruption error. It occurs when your program writes outside the boundaries of allocated memory, overwriting the heap metadata (chunk sizes).
Here are the most effective ways to diagnose and resolve this issue:
2. Check for Specific Software Conflicts If this error occurs while using a third-party application like the Universal Media Server on Linux Mint, it often relates to outdated system libraries or Java environment mismatches.Ensure your Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is up to date.
If iamthebull has jre installed, do you think that it is worth configuring UMS to use that rather than the UMS supplied java?
PS: Some strange behaviour in the 21.3 UMS log:
