I think it would be better to use the UMS java install.
I think the one that is used is actually an older version (17) for some reason and there has been talk of updating to a newer one (22) but would need some code changes to make sure everything works.

That libzen is one thing we never figured out. Strange it is in the logs for the 21.3 computer and not the 22.3 one.
Maybe the 21.3 is not crashing the same way as it cannot scan the files the same way?
This might mean the problem could be with MediaInfo.

The "Unable to load the configuration" message will just mean it is run for the first time so there are no configuration files yet. The same thing appeared in the very first logs but not the others.

Perhaps "mediainfo" is not installed on the Mint v21.3 computer..

These packages are needed.
vlc-nox
mplayer
mencoder
ffmpeg
mediainfo
dcraw

vlc-nox
Here you list vlc-nox as a required package and you also did in a previous post. The INSTALL.txt file does not have vlc-nox as a prerequisite instead it has vlc-bin. Is that what you meant to write? Also

Code: Select all

david@Desktop1:/opt/ums-15.6.0$ apt search vlc-nox
returns nothing.

We were discussing ffmpeg earlier since there seems to be an issue with my system ffmpeg. Since ffmpeg is included with UMS is it necessary to install as a prerequisite? It is not listed in INSTALL.txt as a prerequisite.

Side question: by default UMS adds shares in the users home directory during install (ie. Music, Videos, Pictures). Is there a way to stop that?

Re: VLC
Sorry, vlc-nox is the older unmaintained version ov VLC.
vlc-bin is correct.

UMS does have its own ffmpeg but UMS.conf has to be configured to use the inbuilt ffmpeg.

I don't remember UMS adding the shares (Music, Videos, Pictures) in the users home directory for myself.
I did a fresh install to check and it did not add them for me.
That's not a big issue to sort out anyway.

From your Mint 21.3 computer, can you post the files:
/home/david/.config/UMS/UMS.conf
/home/david/.config/UMS/SHARED.conf

What OS are you installing on? I just did a fresh install on Mint 22.3 and it automatically added Videos, Music, Pictures and Public folders from ~/

In every version of UMS that I have tried during this testing some folders have been automatically added. In newer versions it is the folders listed above and in older versions it included the home directory (~/) and the UMS install directory (in my case /opt/ums-x.y.z).

How do I get UMS to not do that?

From the Mint 21.3 PC

Note: I only installed UMS on Mint 21.3 to see if the malloc() error was present there and it's not. And to be honest I think I forgot to install the prerequisites (ie. mediainfo dcraw vlc-bin mplayer mencoder). I don't intend to use UMS on this PC and I'm not looking to troubleshoot this install for my own purposes. That being said, if you guys are curious about something you've seen in the logs and want me to try some things out on this install I am willing to do that.

UMS.conf

Code: Select all

jwt_secret = 8639c046
cred.path = /home/david/.config/UMS/UMS.cred
language = en-US
engines = FFmpegVideo,MEncoderVideo,tsMuxeRVideo,VLCVideo,FFmpegAudio,tsMuxeRAudio,FFmpegHlsVideo,FFmpegWebVideo,VLCWebVideo,VLCVideoStreaming,MEncoderWebVideo,VLCAudioStreaming,DCRaw,youtubeDl
engines_priority = FFmpegVideo,FFmpegHlsVideo,MEncoderVideo,tsMuxeRVideo,VLCVideo,FFmpegAudio,tsMuxeRAudio,FFmpegWebVideo,youtubeDl,VLCWebVideo,VLCVideoStreaming,MEncoderWebVideo,VLCAudioStreaming,DCRaw
was_youtube_dl_enabled_once = true
hide_advanced_options = false
scan_shared_folders_on_startup = false
run_wizard = false
show_info = false
ffmpeg_available_gpu_acceleration_methods = none,auto,cuda,vaapi,qsv,drm,opencl,vulkan,amf
uuid = 138fab13-48c2-4917-abf8-a1664693613c
SHARED.conf

Code: Select all

[
  {
    "file": "/media/music",
    "monitored": true,
    "metadata": true,
    "active": true,
    "groups": [],
    "type": "Folder"
  }
]

I did my install on Gentoo Linux.
The only reason I wanted to try and get Mint 21.3 computer working was to try and nail down if the problem was something specific to your Mint 22.3 computer.

If you did want to try and get UMS working on you Mint 21.3 computer:
Use the /home/david/.config/UMS/UMS.conf file on your 22.3 computer on your 21.3 computer.
Then modify the /home/david/.config/UMS/UMS.conf entry:
ffmpeg_path =
To
ffmpeg_path = /opt/ums/ums-15.6.0/linux/ffmpeg

This is clutching at straws a bit, but you could try this on your 22.3 computer.
Edit: /opt/ums/ums-15.6.0/UMS.sh
and change the entry: UMS_MAX_MEMORY=1280M
To:
UMS_MAX_MEMORY=2048M

PS: Just turn of the /home/david/videos pictures music public folders for now.

On the same computer that I have the Mint 21.3 installation (my laptop) I also have a Mint 22.3 installation. So I installed UMS-15.6.0 on the Mint 22.3 installation and did a scan of the Music folder (mounted as a network drive) and did not get the malloc() error. I've attached the log and config files. Notice any differences between this and the 22.3 install that's crashing (my desktop)?

In the meantime I will try testing the individual RAM sticks on the desktop.

Let us know how the individual RAM goes.
Nothing sticks out comparing the debug.log files from 22.3 on your desktop v 22.3 on your laptop.
Maybe @mik_s can spot something.

RAM test:
I have 4x4GB sticks so I did the following.
1 and 2
3 and 4
1 and 3
2 and 4
All four tests resulted in malloc error.
