No DTS audio on Yamaha RX-A2040

Post by Lammerts »

I have a Yamaha RX-A2040 and it is a very nice device, lots of settings, power, in/output etc.

The Yamaha can play DLNA audio from my NAS and after I added DTS audio, I was searching for "something" which could play DTS, FLAC and MP3 from my NAS to the A2040 using DLNA.
I found the possible solution in UMS, which can play all these kinds of audio files and now the problem starts :-)

I have been trying to setup UMS for several versions and years now and 1 time it plays DTS audio to the Yamaha (using rendering or transcoding) and then it doesn't. I can't get to the culprit of this behavior, but when the 1 time it is possible to play DTS audio trough UMS using rendering or transcoding it should be possible all the time. I have been running UMS on Windows, Linux and docker, but sometimes it starts playing DTS out of the box, but as soon as I change something in the config or try to add a new audio folder, it stops playing DTS. MP3 and FLAC are still playable so access to the audio location is still ok.
I tried to make copy of the UMS.conf files when DTS playing was ok, and tried to copy it back when doing a new installation, but that never made it work, so the solution seems te be in something else...... (I think)

I know the RX-A2040 does not show in the list of available Renders, but how much difference is there between the A1010 or A2050 except output power?\

I I can make this DTS play working, I finally have the winning solution for me. The Yamaha then can play MP3, FLAC and DTS audio and also I can stream my radio stations with UMS after my cable provider killed FM pass-trough and a inner antenna does not work.

There is probably no matching conf for your model so UMS does not know what settings to use.

Assuming the A1010 or A2050 have similar support for various formats you can just copy one of those confs and make the tweaks so UMS can make a match.
You will have to see what headers the A2040 uses to identify itself and change that section n the conf.

I can help but would need to see your logs (see the section in red above)

I followed the instructions to run UMS in docker, but I am no docker specialist and I cannot find the location of the UMS.conf.

The only UMS.conf I can find is in srv/ums/app/profile/UMS.conf and holds:

Code: Select all

jwt_secret = 2af4ef4d
cred.path = /profile/UMS.cred
engines = FFmpegVideo,MEncoderVideo,tsMuxeRVideo,VLCVideo,FFmpegAudio,tsMuxeRAudio,FFmpegHlsVideo,FFmpegWebVideo,VLCWebVideo,VLCVideoStreaming,MEncoderWebVideo,VLCAudioStreaming,DCRaw,youtubeDl
engines_priority = FFmpegVideo,FFmpegHlsVideo,MEncoderVideo,tsMuxeRVideo,VLCVideo,FFmpegAudio,tsMuxeRAudio,FFmpegWebVideo,youtubeDl,VLCWebVideo,VLCVideoStreaming,MEncoderWebVideo,VLCAudioStreaming,DCRaw
was_youtube_dl_enabled_once = true
ffmpeg_available_gpu_acceleration_methods = none,auto,vdpau,cuda,vaapi,qsv,drm,opencl
uuid = d2461145-6665-4ad3-8be9-54ce77241176
network_interface=ens3
authentication_enabled = false
resume = false
show_media_library_folder = false
show_recently_played_folder = false
show_transcode_folder = false
audio_remux_ac3 = false
audio_use_pcm = true
audio_channels = 2
server_name = Docker UMS
web_player_controls = false
web_player_download = false
encoded_audio_passthrough = true
But I think that is not the UMS you mean/want

I also tried to install UMS on a Window Server (running in ESXi 6.7, made snapshot before installing) and had it running the first time (DTS audio on Yamaha RX-A2040). I made a copy of the UMS.conf (better to find in Windows) and used it after I had made some changes in the config (name, media share etc) but it failed to play DTS, even when I copied back the original UMS.conf

No not UMS.conf, that is only the programs settings.
you need a render specific conf that tells UMS what that renderer can play.

I don't know the exact location on Linux but existing confs will be in the renderers folder in the installation directory,
in windows this is C:\Program Files\Universal Media Server\renderers

Custom confs should use the configuration folder of your system and not the installation folder.
This way they do not get overwritten when updating UMS and does not need special permissions if you need to alter it while UMS is running.
In windows this would be C:\ProgramData\UMS\renderers, I think it was something like user/home/config/ in Linux but don't know exactly without seeing logs.

The UMS.conf that is in srv/ums/app/profile/ would be the one copied into your configuration folder when installed but is not used when UMS is running.
But I know even less about Docker than Linux so I am not sure if this is the installation folder or not.

The current confs for Yamaha are

Code: Select all

Yamaha-AV.conf
Yamaha-RN303.conf
Yamaha-RN500.conf
Yamaha-RXA1010.conf
Yamaha-RXA2050.conf
Yamaha-RXV500D.conf
Yamaha-RXV671.conf
Yamaha-RXV3900.conf
Have a look at them to see what you need to set up a new one for your model.

If you copy Yamaha-RXA2050.conf and change the line

Code: Select all

UpnpDetailsSearch = RX-A2050
to

Code: Select all

UpnpDetailsSearch = RX-A2040
that is probably all you need assuming this is what is sent in the headers when communicating with UMS. The only way to be sure is to see your logs.

In this conf it does not specify if DTS is supported except in WAV files, but as it lists other extensions that are this should be enough to cover DTS too.
If it does not work I will need to see logs of while you attempt to play these with a new conf so I can see what is happening.

You can also play from the #--TRANSCODE--# folder and select "no transcoding" to test if it can play them natively.

I run UMS in a Docker / Portainer environment. With Portainer i am able to "connect" to a cmd session which let me into the linux cmd environment.

I was able to find the yamaha****.conf files (see below) and copied the original 2050.conf to 2050_org.conf
You mention to change the UpnpDetailsSearch = RX-A2050 to UpnpDetailsSearch = RX-A2040. Is this the only thing to change?

Code: Select all

modelName=RX-A2050
# modelNumber=A2050
# modelDescription=AV Receiver
# manufacturerURL=http://www.yamaha.com/
# modelURL=http://www.yamaha.com/
# =============================================
# http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/aventage/rx-a2050_black_u/

UpnpDetailsSearch = RX-A2050                     <this line?
LoadingPriority = 1

Video = false
Image = false
SeekByTime = true
TranscodeAudio = WAV
StreamExtensions = dff,dsf,l16,lpcm

# Supported audio formats:
Supported = f:m4a              m:audio/x-m4a              a:(?!alac).+
Supported = f:aiff             m:audio/L16
Supported = f:flac             m:audio/flac
Supported = f:lpcm             m:audio/L16
Supported = f:mp3     n:2      m:audio/mpeg
Supported = f:wav              m:audio/L16                a:atmos|dts|dtshd|lpcm
Supported = f:wma              m:audio/x-ms-wma

Yes but to know exactly what it needs to be I need to see your logs to see what your device uses.
At a guess changing it to RX-A2040 will work but can't be sure.

You should also change the RendererName so you can see if it is using this conf.

Don't edit this file directly though. Make a copy, rename it and put it in the renderer folder in your user config folder.
If you don't then your changes will get overwritten when UMS is updated.

For what it is worth.
I have run UMS on a Gentoo Linux headless server for many years.

Under the "renderers" folder, I create another folder named "renderers.original"
I then move all the device conf files from "renderers" to "renderers.original".
I then place only the device conf files I need in "renderers" and make any modifications to the conf files in "renderers" whilst leaving all the conf files in "renderers.original" in their default configuration.

I have had UMS running on headless ubuntu and Debian. Also on Windows Servers and Workstations and on Docker, which is the way to use/install UMS, according to UMS.
In all this situations I have had UMS running with DTS rendered on the A2040, and I am talking over a period of the last 5 years or so. Every time I made a copy of the UMS.conf file and as soon after something changed, (name, IP, setting for naming, or even a reboot) the DTS rendering stopped.

With UMS on Docker I ruled out a wrong way of installation and dit it the "UMS" way. But docker gives me a lot of problem finding back the locations of files etc, because they almost don't exist if the UMS docker isn't running, and when it is running, I can't find the locations. For the rest the UMS is running fine, I can even stream Radio Stations which is a big +

You do not need to alter the UMS.conf file.
You can set (almost) everything up in the web interface. The few options not in the GUI are rarely used, the only one I use is to keep in TRACE mode for troubleshooting.

It is probably better to start with a fresh install and set everything up again as changes to how the settings are stored will not carry over if you copy an old UMS.conf
For example your shared folders are no longer stored in here and some setting names have changed.

The important part to get your renderers working is to to set up renderer confs if UMS does not already have one for that device. This has nothing to do with UMS.conf
This tells UMS if your renderer can play Videos, pictures, or just Music. It also sets up supported formats like DTS

I cannot help you with this as you have not posted your logs so I can't tell you where they are on your system.

I know next to nothing about Docker so I don't know if there is an external configuration folder that gets added into the container for UMS to access, or if it is an internal folder that cannot be accessed from outside the container and you need to be inside it to make changes.

I am unable to retrieve the zip file from the UMS running in docker.
I had the same setup running in a Ubuntu VM and here i was able to download the zip file and hereby attached.
Also i had all the conf files from the renderers folder copied to a new folder conf-file. Only the Yamaha conf files remain in the renderers folder.
LIke mentioned earlier, i modified the Yamaha-RXA2050.conf file to suit the RX-2040 receiver
