I opened an issue on github and the developers seem disinterested in addressing this issue.

I booted Mint 22.3 using a Live USB and installed UMS-15.6.0 then scanned Music folder and got the malloc error. That should rule out my OS SSD.

Hard disks

On the desktop
I copied the Music folder to a different physical HDD and scanned - malloc error
I copied the Music folder to a different physical SDD and scanned - malloc error
This suggests it's not a hardware issue with the hard disks

On the laptop (Mint 22.3)

I installed valgrind and ran:

The OS (Mint 22.3) is running on an SSD - INTEL SSDSC2BW240A4 (DC02) and the media files (Music folder) is on a HDD - WDC WD20EFRX-68EUZN0 (80.00A80) on the same PC.

I just reinstalled Mint 22.3 on the desktop this past Sunday (2 days ago) for another reason but that didn't help this situation.

RE: system logs
There was no /var/log/messages on my system

david@Desktop1:~/.config/UMS$ grep "malloc()" /var/log/messages
grep: /var/log/messages: No such file or ...

I also just tried your suggestion of setting UMS_MAX_MEMORY=2048M and still got the malloc error.

RAM test:
I have 4x4GB sticks so I did the following.
1 and 2
3 and 4
1 and 3
2 and 4
All four tests resulted in malloc error.

On the same computer that I have the Mint 21.3 installation (my laptop) I also have a Mint 22.3 installation. So I installed UMS-15.6.0 on the Mint 22.3 installation and did a scan of the Music folder (mounted as a network drive) and did not get the malloc() error. I've attached the log and config ...
