Media Server No Longer Visible when using Tailscale
So I've got UMS running as an AppImage on an old PC running Linux Mint 22.1.
Works just like I expect it to, the web player is great and my PS3 and Windows 10 PC see the media server properly.
Problem is when I enable Tailscale on my Mint PC it breaks the actual media server portion. The web player still works, and works on the Tailscale IP outside of the home like I wanted, but I don't want to have to sudo tailscale down and restart UMS every time I want to use UMS with my PS3.
Is there a way that I can make both coexist?

Re: Media Server No Longer Visible when using Tailscale
I'm not familiar with Tailscale but a quick search shows it is a VPN.
Problem with commercial VPNs is if you do not control the source and destination then these will not work with UMS as it is connecting to someone else's network.
UMS can sometimes select the active network interface which can be the VPN so it cannot transmit on your local network at the same time.
I don't know if Tailscale gives you control other both sides though.
I don't know anything about VPNs or how to configure them but if set up properly your remote computer will appear on your network as a local machine then this will be transparent to UMS and should work as normal.
If UMS is choosing the wrong network interface then you can force it to use the physical one in the settings. It should usually be ignoring the virtual VPN interface. UMS is meant for serving the local network but it can be used outside if you know what you are doing, this might help with one method of doing it and I remember other guides somewhere on the forum but can't find them at the minute.

Re: Media Server No Longer Visible when using Tailscale
I have a feeling the problem might be:
For 2 devices to communicate on your LAN, they both have to be on the same subnet.
EG:
Linux Mint server IP: 192.168.0.1
Windows 10 PC IP: 192.168.0.5
PS3 IP: 192.168.0.8
They are all on the 192.168.0.* subnet.
When you run a VPN on a device (Like your Linux server), it masks the normal IP address (EG: 192.168.0.1) and allocates another which is not in the 192.168.0.* range.
A lot of VPN's have a configuration setting to overcome this problem.
Depending on which VPN, the setting is called a few different things like:
"Stay invisible on a local network" (on Nord VPN) and has to be set to "Off".
A quick search indicates that the Tailscale setting is:
"Allow LAN access"
You can do a search on: Tailscale Allow LAN access
Or some info here:

Re: Media Server No Longer Visible when using Tailscale
Setting the Force IP of Server to the local IP of the machine it is running on fixed it. The server shows up on my PS3 again while the web server works both on the local IP and the tailscale IP.mik_s wrote: ↑Wed Aug 27, 2025 4:36 pm I'm not familiar with Tailscale but a quick search shows it is a VPN.
