Problem on Linux Mint 22.3

I installed UMS (15.6.0) on Linux Mint 22.3. The first time I ran the shell script I was prompted to use a config wizard and I said yes. The wizard asked a few setup questions then opened http://localhost:9001/ in my browser which showed an authentication page but then UMS crashed. The output on the terminal is below:

I don't know much about Linux so @boss should be of more help.

It might be helpful if you could get trace mode logs, see the section in red above.
If it is crashing before being able to open the GUI then you can manually edit /home/david/.config/UMS/UMS.conf to add

This may be a permissions problem in linux so is preventing UMS from accessing its config files.
I see you are running from your downloads folder. Try installing it on your system folder, I think this is opt but not 100% sure
Someone else was having problems with this here but I don't think it went anywhere. you could try the same steps and see if that helps.

I think the crash has something to do with the process that scans the shared folders. I set scan_shared_folders_on_startup = false in UMS.conf and was able to start the server without it crashing. I explored the web interface a bit then I manually triggered a scan of the shared folders in the web interface and after a few min it crashed again with the same output.

Then I started the server again and triggered the scan of the shared folders but this time the server did not crash. Maybe because each time the scan partially finished and this time it fully completed??? Anyway that log file is here:

It does look to be related to the file scan as that is when it stops but there are no errors logged.
But in the last one the files would have been mostly scanned so is able to complete before it crashes.

In the first logs you posted there is a "malloc(): invalid size (unsorted)" at the end, I think malloc is memory allocation but I don't know enough to say if it is a OS thing or a problem in UMS.
Maybe it would work if you assign more memory to UMS in the startup script?

I think there is some OS logging that could help but I don't know anything about that. @boss do you have any ideas?

The correct location for UMS is in the /opt directory so keep using it from there.

mik_s is correct in that the "malloc(): invalid size (unsorted)" error is moreso related to the Linux system rather than UMS.

It could possibly be a corruption in the UMS database triggering it,
Try this.
Stop UMS
rm /home/david/.config/UMS/database -r
Restart UMS. A fresh database directory and database files will be created on startup.

See how that works.
If there is still a problem, can you post the following files inside a zipped file.

I removed the database and restarted UMS but I still had scan_shared_folders_on_startup = false in UMS.conf so I shut down the server and changed to true and restarted the server. No problems on the first startup since there was no scanning. The second startup crashed with the same malloc() error.

Your UMS.conf file (/home/david/.config/UMS/UMS.conf) seems incomplete. Normally there is a lot more in that file.
Compare my UMS.conf file with yours.

Perhaps that is because none of the entries with defaults have not been included in your UMS.conf file.
Just to make sure that is not causing any issues, can you:
mv /home/david/.config/UMS/UMS.conf /home/david/.config/UMS/UMS.conf.bak
and copy my UMS.conf to /home/david/.config/UMS/

It looks like you are only using 1 shared folder which is all music. Is that the case?
What is your estimate of the number of music files in your shared folder?

Can you check that the following packages are installed on mint and they are the latest versions.

It is probably worth getting the output of ffmpeg (to check the enabled options) as well if you could post that.

The UMS.conf file you attached is exactly the same as the UMS.conf located in my /opt/ums-15.6.0/ folder and doesn't have the server_name set to anything. Did you send the right one?

The config wizard prompted me to share one folder and I randomly picked the Music folder. I have other folders with videos I was intending to share once I sorted the crashing issue out. There are around 3000 files and 230 directories in Music.

The INSTALL.txt in /opt/ums-15.6.0/ instructs to install the dependencies:

sudo apt-get install mediainfo dcraw vlc-bin mplayer mencoder

which doesn't include ffmpeg so I installed it and I still have the malloc() error. Also vlc-bin is listed instead of vlc-nox. Which one should it be? Maybe INSTALL.txt needs to be updated?
