Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
I also just tried your suggestion of setting UMS_MAX_MEMORY=2048M and still got the malloc error.
Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
You have tried all the combinations so that discounts a RAM error.
I'm stumped and don't know where to go from here.
Apart from a reinstall of Mint I can't suggest anything else.
Maybe @mik_s can spot something comparing the logs.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
I just reinstalled Mint 22.3 on the desktop this past Sunday (2 days ago) for another reason but that didn't help this situation.
RE: system logs
There was no /var/log/messages on my system
returned nothing
returned nothing as well
RE: system logs
There was no /var/log/messages on my system
Code: Select all
david@Desktop1:~/.config/UMS$ grep "malloc()" /var/log/messages
grep: /var/log/messages: No such file or directory
david@Desktop1:~/.config/UMS$ dmesg | grep -i "malloc()"
Code: Select all
david@Desktop1:/var/log$ sudo cat *log | grep "malloc"
grep: (standard input): binary file matches
Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
Try
grep "mailoc()" /var/log/ -r
It will take a while as that searches all the logs.

Does your desktop have a video card as well as an on board video.
Video cards have been know to cause some strange memory issues.

I don't know what else I can suggest.
Discounted RAM as an issue.
We know it works with Mint 22.3 as it works on your laptop.
You have reinstalled Mint on your desktop.
The only thing left is the hardware difference between your laptop and desktop.
@mik_s. Maybe one fore the developers?

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
There is a package called valgrind(I haven't used it) which can give more info with malloc errors
Usage,:
valgrind ./your_program_name
Usage,:
valgrind ./your_program_name
Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
I did not see anything from the laptop 22.3 logs, it all looks good so definitely something wrong on the desktop 22.3
Did you try the ram tests using only 1 stick instead of in pairs.
Running in single channel might expose the problem sooner, and let the ram test run for a while not just a few cycles.
Besides that I am stumped at what else it could be but think it could be more hardware related than to do with the OS.
Does that desktop have a SSD or a hard drive?
I'm thinking with all the read access to do with scanning a large amount of small MP3 files rapidly may be a factor.
I think I saw a video about SSDs that some use the ram as a cache if they don't have one on the drive and maybe this process is going wrong.
See if there is a program from the manufacturer of the drive that will show is there are any errors on the drive itself.

Re: Problem on Linux Mint 22.3
The OS (Mint 22.3) is running on an SSD - INTEL SSDSC2BW240A4 (DC02) and the media files (Music folder) is on a HDD - WDC WD20EFRX-68EUZN0 (80.00A80) on the same PC.
No. With only 1 stick of RAM I was wondering if we would maybe run into memory issues due to the OS not having so much memory (only 4GB). So I stuck with pairs and mixed them up enough to be thorough. I would think if there was a hardware issue with the RAM it would have shown up by now. And there would be RAM issues with other programs. Which there isn't.
I've been thinking about that also but from the perspective of maybe we don't get the malloc error on the Mint 22.3 install on the laptop because it's reading the Music folder over the network which is significantly slower.
